Outschool vs Owning Your Online Academy
Outschool is a class marketplace with fees and their brand. Owning an academy means your domain, your teachers, and session revenue in your Stripe account.

Outschool is a marketplace for live online classes. Teachers list sections, parents browse, and the platform takes a cut. It is closer to a storefront for group classes than to a 1-on-1 tutoring academy, but the ownership problem is the same as Preply or Wyzant: the family belongs to the marketplace.
If you are a teacher testing a niche class, Outschool can fill seats you would not have found alone. If you are building a durable academy brand, you are renting a booth in someone else’s mall.
What you get on a class marketplace
- Discovery: parents already shopping for live classes.
- A listing format, reviews, and their checkout.
- Rules about refunds, messaging, and how you brand yourself.
- Fees that come out of every enrollment, often in a range similar to other education marketplaces.
What you do not get
- A domain that is yours. Parents bookmark Outschool.
- A teacher roster you hire under one academy identity.
- A parent portal for your packages, not their catalog.
- 100% of session or class revenue after processing. Launch Your Academy does not take a commission on customer charges. Pricing is the software plan.
Group class vs 1-on-1 academy
Outschool leans group sections. Many tutoring businesses lean 1-on-1 or very small groups with a named tutor. If your offer is “Mrs. Khan, algebra, Thursday 5 p.m.,” a marketplace grid that compares you to 40 other algebra classes trains parents to shop price, not loyalty.
An owned academy still lets you run small groups if your product supports it. The point is the login and the invoice say your name. Compare the tutor-marketplace version of this argument in marketplace vs your own academy.
A clean split
Use a class marketplace to validate a topic you cannot fill from your own list. Move repeating families onto your academy as soon as the relationship is real, and follow that marketplace’s off-platform rules. Do not build payroll on a listing you do not control.
If you already have teachers and local demand, skip the mall. Brand the four portals, connect Stripe, and sell the next package on your site.
